Installation of piped water to garden faucets

The garden expansion project proposal identified two major tasks: (1) constructing four raised garden beds and (2) installing piped water to new garden faucets. Construction of the four garden beds has been completed and installing the water pipes has begun. Last week students assisted Mr. Sandy in digging 70-feet of 12-in deep trenches. Kindergarten and grade 1 student planting in garden

Over the last few days the kindergarten and grade 1 classes have come to the garden for a lesson in gardening and to plant vegetable seedlings. Mrs Baer's twenty-four grade 1 students came to the garden on Friday and Mrs Vogt's twenty-nine kindergarten students came to the garden on yesterday. Ten students at a time used trowels to dig holes and plant the seedlings while Mrs. Sandy entertained the other students with a short lesson on gardening. Grade 5 students plant in new garden bed

Yesterday Mr. Chambers' and Mrs Vander Linden's grade 5 students came to the garden just before noon and planted corn and tomato seedlings that had been donated the day before by Green Thumb Nursery in Ventura. Mr Sandy showed students how and where to dig the hole, how to remove the plant from the plastic container and how to place the root ball in the hole and cover it with dirt. Last garden bed walls completed

Over the past two days Elden Sandy leveled the bottom of the hole for the garden bed, installed the plastic sheet in the hole with help from Rick Austinson, cut and installed the cement board for the floor of the garden bed, then stacked the concrete block on the cement board. As a result, the last bed to be constructed is now ready to be filled with dirt and compost. [The day following this post students filled the last garden bed with compost and dirt.]

Creating a new raised bed and filling three with soil-amendment mixture

Saturday, April 6, was a garden workday for adults. Mrs. Brewer, Mrs. Baer, Mr. Cook and Mr. Sandy were the crew for the day. Using wheelbarrows, we moved 6 cubic yards of compost that had been delivered in a pile on the parking lot in front of the school. We dumped the compost into the two empty garden beds created last week, then added dirt to create a 50-50 mix of compost and soil.
